Marine hydrodynamics is a field of engineering importance in application to ship and platform seakeeping and design, underwater vehicles, and sensor development and deployment systems. Many important problems involve coupled dynamic systems where rigid and flexible bodies are reacting to hydrodynamic forcing. The staff at APS have worked in many aspects of marine hydrodynamics, drawing upon backgrounds in computational fluid dynamics, experimental hydrodynamics, and naval architecture.
At APS we focus on using our understanding of the underlying physics to develop and apply computationally-efficient models to respond to our customers’ needs in a cost-effective manner. In the field of hydrodynamics and seakeeping, this translates into an understanding of the range of flows encountered by surface and undersea vessels and structures, the capability to apply a variety of simulation models and techniques, and an understanding of the assumptions, limitations, and interpretation of the different approaches.
Core technologies include steady and unsteady free surface flows, steady and unsteady lifting surface hydrodynamics, fluid-structure interaction, low Reynolds number viscous flows, design optimization, and computational geometry.
