NEWS: APS to Reduce Pile Driving Noise Associated With Offshore Wind Farm Construction
Under a contract with the U. S. Department of the Interior, APS is developing innovative techniques that will mitigate pile driving noise generated by the installation of large mono-pile foundations for offshore wind turbines.  The objective of the work is the reduction of the noise levels sensed by nearby marine life to acceptable levels based on existing state and government standards. Under the first phase of the contract, APS established the relative importance of each sound transmission path and assessed the potential effectiveness of different sound mitigation options. Going forward, APS will refine the leading mitigation options into feasible and cost effective designs and will develop, implement and validate a full scale prototype installation.  This work will entail close collaboration between APS and the offshore construction industry and work on large mono-pile installations on the outer continental shelf.
